Microsoft Vista Aero vs. Linux Ubuntu Beryl
Written by Mat Collins on April 26, 2007 – 12:57 amAnnounced on July 22nd, 2005 Released on January 30, 200, Microsoft Vista’s “Aero” has most high end computers looking quite fancy. It’s quite the eye candy.
So, I wanted to install Vista on my computer. Here’s a brief description of this past Monday:
- Backup needed files from C: to D:
- Pop in Vista Ultimate
- Install for 50 minutes, sometimes looking locked up
- Get all Windows updates and drivers installed.
- Find out that my video drivers are just plain shitty.
- Spend 45 Minutes installing Windows XP
- Spend 2+Hours running Windows Updates
- Restore all software again.
In all, once the annoyances on Vista are disabled, Vista with Aero is hot.
Then, I see this video:
After watching that video I think to myself: “I spend all that money on Windows Vista Ultimate; A product in development for almost 2 years… and then something 100x better comes up from nowhere… free and opensource.”
In closing, I must say that Beryl takes the cake here. What do you think?

Must check out Beryl sometime - I’m dual booting XP with Kubuntu.
I had to laugh at your point 7 - “Spend 2+Hours running Windows Updates”. I just rebuilt an XP pro machine the other day and boy was that fun - Windows Updates could be a full time job.

Actually, after posting this I went ahead and setup a dual-boot with an existing Windows XP partition. Beryl definitely amazes me. Every time I fiddle with it, I find something new…

I am a Microsoft Office user since as far as I remember… - Office is a great product, however it needs Microsoft Windows as the underlying operating system in order to run it properly.
I could say that Microsoft Office 2003 combined with Microsoft Windows (XP) is the best for office productivity.
Things changed when I tried PCLinuxOS with Beryl 2 months ago. After that I tried many Linux distro to find out the best distro (with Beryl) that suit my needs. I find Ubuntu Feisty with Beryl and VMware Player (running WinXP/Office 2003 in the virtual machine) is the BEST solution for me today. I am using Lenovo T60 with 2GB DRAM. Feisty+Beryl+WinXP VM running very stable in my machine. I use my Lenovo mainly for browsing, email, presentation, and playing with new software.
Btw., I never tried Vista, because I think Linux is still better in many ways (i.e. memory utilization, dual core utilization, etc….) , and Linux (with proper setting & knowledge) also ‘virtually’ free from virus….

Hi.
Why not try using Windows TinyXP 2??? It’s a stripped down WinXP Pro, and it’s got Aero in it!
